Poster Printing Guidelines
About the Printer
The Instructional Technology Department in the College of Education has purchased a Hewlett Packard DesignJet 800ps large format inkjet plotter.
This photo-realistic printer has a 42-inch wide capacity and can print onto rolls up to 100 feet in length. The HP DesignJet 800PS plotter produces great-looking posters, with brilliant colors produced at a resolution of 1200 dots per inch at a low cost for GSU faculty and staff.
General Information
If your department is interested in plotting an image or poster, please keep these guidelines in mind:
- Two sizes of presentation quality paper are available: The heavyweight, bright white paper is 24 or 42-inches wide on rolls up to 100 feet in length.
- Our preferred printing software is Microsoft PowerPoint. We do not support Quark or PageMaker. We have had some success with Microsoft Publisher, but for best results, we recommend PowerPoint. (See Creating a Poster in PowerPoint for help.)
- We cannot print large quanitities of posters (more than 5) as supplies most likely will not be on hand.
- Because it is not the mission of the ITC is not to act as a print shop, we ask for at least 5 days of lead-time before you need the finished poster.
Proof Before You Submit
Utilizing the proofing /preview process for checking content, spelling and imported images will help prevent mistakes on your final poster and prevent costly reprints.
Submitting your File for Printing
- The file should be either a PowerPoint Document or a properly sized graphic that can be opened in Adobe Photoshop or Acrobat.
- Your file needs to be in PC format.
- Your document should be submitted either on CD, USB Key or Zip Drive (Remember, these files will be quite big and will most likely exceed the size of a floppy disk.)
- You need to deliver your file in person to Sue Husted. You can make an appointment by calling 404-413-8081 or emailing her at shusted@gsu.edu. During the appointment we will examine the file and insure that it is viable for printing.
- While we will try to accommodate your request as soon as possible, please allow for a lead-time of up to 5 business days.
Transporting Your Poster
If you are concerned with transporting your poster, bring a 24 or 42 inch long poster tube or other form of transportation. Printed posters are susceptible to damage if mishandled. The ink the plotter prints with is water-soluble and can run if exposed to the elements.
Costs
Printing costs are determined by the size of the printout, the amount of ink coverage required, and the size of the paper roll. The base costs are determined by the linear foot, along the length of the poster. 24” roll of heavyweight-coated paper is $3.00 per linear foot 42” roll of heavyweight-coated paper is $5.00 per linear foot Ink coverage that exceeds 60% will be charged an additional $2.00 per linear foot
